The Story
In the year 2075, the Earth Defense Force (EDF) received a distress signal from a small mining facility on the surface of Mars. A group of rebels calling themselves the Red Faction had overthrown the ruthless Ultor Corporation after years of oppression. The EDF responded by launching a fleet of warships to Mars to aid the miners, bring Ultor to justice and restore order to the Martian colonies. In order to ensure safety and security for the newly liberated colonists, the EDF set up command posts and bases across the planet. Initially, under the EDF's rule, the people of Mars prospered: colonists established homesteads, built towns and independent mining operations and began to stake and work their mining claims. But the more things change on Mars, the more they stay the same.

The troubles began with colonists being driven from their homes and mining claims by greedy, Earth-based corporations. Then came a 50 year turn of events that saw the EDF adopting the heavy-handed tactics that it once stood against. Yet in doing so it also instilled a deep-seated resentment among the miners and settlers of the Martian colonies. One of these new Martians is miner Alec Mason, whose dream of a new life carved out of the course Martian soil was crushed in the face of EDF-ordered curfews, detention centers, beatings, mass arrests and personal tragedy. But as powerful as the EDF is, there is resistance. Mason and a small group of revolutionaries have banded together, taken up the Red Faction name and pledged to again bring about a free Mars. And though their enemy has changed, their battle cry remains unchanged: "Better Red than Dead."

Key Game Features:

  • Join the Revolution - When the citizens of Mars can no longer bear the injustice of an oppressive regime, the fate of the planet lies in the hands of Alex Mason and the Red Faction.
  • Open World Guerilla Warfare - You decide who, when, where and how to battle. Utilize guerilla tactics, improvised weaponry, and modified vehicles to lead insurgent attacks on EDF targets. Launch attacks based on your own gameplay style, take on missions in any order you choose, or engage in destructive activities to weaken the EDF’s grip on Mars.
  • Geo-Mod Technology 2.0 - Use destruction to your tactical advantage, setting ambushes or chain reaction explosions to attack enemy strongholds and permanently modify the game environment. Leverage fully-dynamic physics-based destruction to improvise on the fly: blow holes in a wall or floor to set an ambush or escape, take out a staircase to stop your pursuers, or drive vehicles through blown out walls.
  • Evolving & Emergent Gameplay - Carve your path through an ever changing landscape as you improvise your combat tactics – mixing gameplay styles, vehicles, weapons and explosives to defeat the EDF.
  • Epic Sci-fi Setting - Explore the huge, unforgiving Martian landscape, from the desolate mining outpost of Parker to the gleaming EDF capital city of Eos; then tear through the fully destructible open-world environments swarming with EDF forces, Red Faction resistance fighters, and the downtrodden settlers caught in the crossfire.
  • Multiplayer Combat - There is no place to hide when you put your guerilla warfare skills to the test in a variety of highly destructive 2-16 person online multiplayer combat modes.
  • Xbox LIVE Support - Build your Xbox 360 gamer score, achievements collection and leaderboard placement through full Xbox LIVE support.
Guerilla Warfare
You don't stand a chance against the EDF using standard military tactics. The only recourse when the few stand against the many is the use of hit and run tactics. Learn the routes of the patrols and quickest ways in and out of EDF strongholds. By studying these things you can instinctively know when to attack, and when to wait for a better opportunity.

Ambushes are also useful in thinning EDF ranks. Remote charges and proximity mines are your best friend when preparing an ambush. A few well-placed charges on the structural supports of a bridge can do wonders for stopping a convoy dead in its tracks. Above all else, remember this: guerilla tactics are not about fighting fair, they are about winning.

the destruction is unparalleled.

take an open world thrid person shooter set on mars with the most advanced destruction engine to date, throw in some highly addictive multiplayer, and you have yourself the best shooter so far this year(as of June 2009).

forget everything you thought new about in-game environmental destruction. the first time you play Red Faction:Guerilla you will see the new age of destruction. see buildings break apart piece by piece as you tear down the walls of oppression.

in the time since the last red faction, mars has become victim to another tyrannical organization, called the EDF. you came to mars looking for peace and quiet, trying to settle down with a regular mining job. then a tragety comes about that causes you to stand up against the EDF and rain down all kind of destruction, they never bargained for.

controls handle great on the Saints Row 2 engine, whether your switching weapons, fighting, tearing down a building, driving a truck or mech (oh yeah.. theres mechs!!) they also added a cover system similar to GTA IV. theres very little to complain about in this game.

the story of one man fighting for not only his own freedom, but the freedom of an entire planet is inspiring to say the least. it truly is an evil government, and they simply cant be left to continue.

as you take the role of a terrorizing freedom fighter (think Gordon Freeman) you have a nice variety of missions to complete, from specific target buildings that need to be destroyed, to defending worker caps/invading EDF camps, various story missions, timed vehicle deliveries (ew), chase/tailing missions, ect.

overall its a great game. its got the most ambitious/advanced destruction engine to date with a good story, smooth controls, and a wealth of areas and weaponry to unlock.

gameplay 9.5/10

graphics 8.5/10 (considering the interactivity)

controls 9.25/10

sound 7.75/10

story 8.75/10

*destrucion 10/10

overall 9.25/10

replay value = high

The third title from Volition's Red Faction can be summed up in one word, phenominal. Volition paced themselves and it paid off. They paid attention to every little detail of the game; the environment, the character movements, the weapon reactions and the automobiles.

A brief review of the game shows that it comes to terms with what gamers want now-a-days; destruction. Whats more fun that making your own door into a building? Tearing the building down afterwards, of course!

The game is set on Mars, thankfully. Volition has returned to its roots with this one, even including a glimpse of the Ultor mines. You get to return to Capek's lair and retrive something called a Nano Forge. For those who have played the first one may notice something, and I am sure they agree with me on this; The best part of Red Faction Guerilla, is that they incorprated the same infrastructure as in the first Red Faction. Upon returning to Capek's lair, yuo begin to notice this, as it is set the same exact way the original was. In my opinion, that is amazing. You begin to pick out the similarities as you progress further into the game. You return to the badlands, and even travel through the canyons where you first run into the merc's.

The story is not so much cliche in the beginning, but it starts to get a little repetative after the first territoy. But hey, you get over that as soon as you start smashing buildings down.

All in all, thisis Volitions best game yet. The set forth their real potential and it shows. This game is sure to go down, in my book, as one of the best games for the XBox.
Amazing!

As soon as I played the demo I just had to preorder it, and Im glad I did. This is one of the best games I've played in a long time.
The weapons are unique and very creative. I also like the salvage system with which you buy upgrades weapons etc.
There is a decent amount of vehicles and they all have very good control.
However I do suggest playing it on hard+ mode because even on hard I flew through fairly fast.
Aside from the missions, there are plenty of side objectives to keep you entertained. Also when they said everything is destructible they meant it. You can tear down walls, entire buildings, bridges, anything!
The online modes are very fun. As well as good ol' deathmatch and team deathmatch they have created their own modes which are very entertaining, they also supply you with a good amount of maps and customization.
Overall this game is unique and very creative, its just a blast. I recommend it and I'm positive no one will regret buying it.
Great Game

As soon as I put this game in my xbox I was BLOWN away. I have had this game for 3 days and have over 10 hours into it already and I am still blown away from the destruction.

Upgrading: In RF:G you get to upgrade your weapons destroy EVERYTHING. The upgrading is awesome. You can carry more satchel charges, upgrade your armor, sledge hammer, rocket launcher, etc. There are also a good number of vehicles in this game. You can have a slower(still fast) big truck BUT destroys everything or go with the faster, smaller vehicles that doesnt destroy a hole lot. This also includes walkers-light and big walkers.

Destuction: The destruction in this game is amazing. If you see a smoke stack and blow up only one wall it collapes that way(towards the blown wall). If you blow up the top floor its caves in and destroyes the bottom floor. If you blow a huge hole in one side some of the roof will fall in.

RF:G is not that repetitive as other people have said. I love the destruction and actually wish they had more destruction missions. Also they have hostage rescues, they have raids(were you kill about 20 EDF and some of there buildings). There are missions were you have to stop convoys and either steal there vehicles or blow them up. Those are optional thou.

Overall I would recommend this to anyone. This is a great game that will blow you away. This game has a high replay value.

Faction Makes Mining Fun!

Who knew mining on Mars could be this much fun. This game rocks my scrap metal off! Some have complained this game is a bit repetative and i suppose i can agree on that, but i can't seem to get enough of it. Red Faction is all about blowing everything up and it does it in spades. Missions are the typical lot, blow that building up, ambush that convoy, steal that vehicle, intercept that traitor, but its fun gang. Part of the fun is finding out the most efficient and creative way to take a building down. The missions play out like little mini games, one that is particularly satisfying is the demolition trials. The object is to destroy a structure with specific equipment within the alotted time. I played one where the object was to attach sticky bombs onto explosive barrels and drop them down a drainage tube till they landed next to the target building and kaboom! I like these missions as they give me new tactics for taking out the enemy that i may not have even thought about on my own. There are wide variety of vehicles ranging from fast light armored cars to heavy tanks with some serious firepower. I love the robotic walkers you can pilot, they remind of the walker Ripley used in Alien.

The graphics are fantastic and the Martian landscape is truly a sight to behold, it has a very Total Recall feel to it. There is a lot of area to cover too. There are six zones if i remember correctly that you are trying to liberate from the oppressive forces of the EDF (Earth Defense Force). I like the addition of the scavengers that randomly appear here and there wielding their crude weapons, they have a Mad Max feel to them. There a wide variety of weapons at your disposal but you can only carry 4 at a time, one being your trusty hammer. I suppose it is a bit ridiculous that your hammer can bust through solid concrete walls in one hit, but i can overlook that, mainly because this a game and its just plain fun. As you finish missions in each zone, morale raises and more and more miners will pick up arms and join you in your battle which is very helpful because this game can get tough without the help. When they say Guerrilla, they weren't kidding, you really need to utilize hit and run tactics to be successful until you get better weapons and armor later in the game. Overall im very impressed with this title, its a solid game that you can keep coming back to when you feel the need to blow some $h@t up.
